I loved what you wrote about Elspeth Rostow (whom I knew for most of my life - I'm 57 and Walt was best man at my parents wedding). You really 'got' her. Good luck with the job hunt.

Re: your issue of mass consumerism; That is why I favor the flat tax ideas that have been floating about. It is a sales tax at the point of retail purchase. If you want to have less of something, tax it, hence less consumerism. Do away with the income tax and get more of that, to say nothing of trashing the IRS.
An idea that needs discussion.

Dude, you basically pinned down the central thrust of the original "I am Legend" short-story and the old film version with Vincent Price without even being exposed to their particular plot twists. I just saw the Will Smith version tonight, and while I liked it, I felt it missed the essential, deeper point of the story it was based on. I don't know if this shows that the current filmmakers were extremely subtle, or just that you were able to see right through their script changes. Good show, my man.

Good list! I've not read Heart of Darkness though. Sounds like a must-read to me. Wuthering Heights - first time I read it, I hated it. For some reason, I read it again years later and loved it.

I felt it's another movie like "28 Days Later" and "Resident Evil", but reading your post gives a completely different view.
